Conductor of the 9-12 High School Concert Band

Edwin J. Kimbrough has been the Director of Bands at Page High School in Greensboro, North Carolina since 1995. He received his BS in Music Education cum laude from Elon College in 1985 and his MME from the Indiana University School of Music in 1992 where he studied with Ray Cramer and Stephen Pratt. He has previously taught at the Morehead High School and Holmes Middle School in Eden and at Northern and Southern Junior High Schools in Person County.  Mr. Kimbrough has received numerous awards for his teaching, including the Award of Excellence from the Central District Bandmasters Association, Teacher of the Year at Page High School, and the Outstanding Young Educator Award for the Person County Schools.  He has also been listed in the “Who’s Who, Among America’s Teachers” and was accepted in to the American School Band Directors Association. In 2002, Mr. Kimbrough and the Page High School Wind Ensemble had the distinguished honor of performing as the featured ensemble at the North Carolina Music Educators Association Conference.  Mr. Kimbrough has served as Chairman of the Central District Bandmasters Association and as host for the NCBA All-State Band Auditions and the Central District Middle School All-District Clinic. A National Board Certified educator, Mr. Kimbrough is an active clinician in North Carolina and Virginia and has been on the conducting staff for the UNCG Summer Music Camp since 1996. He lives in Summerfield with his wife Jennifer and two daughters, Elizabeth and Allyson.

 

 

Conductor of the 9-10 High School Symphonic Band

DR. KEVIN M. GERALDI is Associate Director of Bands at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In this capacity, he conducts the UNCG Symphonic Band, teaches courses in graduate and undergraduate conducting, conducts the Casella Sinfonietta chamber ensemble, and directs the Wind Ensemble chamber music program. He recently completed the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in instrumental conducting at the University of Michigan where he received a full fellowship to study with Michael Haithcock. Prior to beginning his doctoral studies, he served as Director of Bands at Lander University in Greenwood, S.C.

 

Dr. Geraldi holds a Master of Music degree in conducting from the University of Michigan, where he studied with H. Robert Reynolds.  He received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Illinois Wesleyan University, where he studied conducting with Steven Eggleston and trombone with Thomas Streeter. From 1996-1998, he was director of bands for the Westchester Public Schools in Westchester, IL, where his ensembles received top honors.  Dr. Geraldi served as assistant conductor of the Central Illinois and Michigan Youth Symphonies and he maintains an active schedule as a guest conductor and clinician throughout the country. As a member of the Franklin Park Brass Quintet, which was founded at Illinois Wesleyan University in 1992, Dr. Geraldi has toured the Midwest, New England, and South Carolina, performing recitals and conducting brass and chamber music masterclasses.

 

Dr. Geraldi has studied conducting privately and in seminars with teachers including Gustav Meier, Pierre Boulez, and Frederick Fennell. Recently, he was a participant in the Conductor’s Institute of South Carolina’s opera conducting workshop at the Spoleto Festival, USA.  Dr. Geraldi was named as the 2001-2002 recipient of the Thelma A. Robinson Award, an award given by the Conductors Guild and the National Federation of Music Clubs.

 

Conductor of the 11-12 High School Symphonic Band

John P. LaCognata

John P. LaCognata is currently enjoying his twenty-second year as an instrumental music educator.  He is currently a Graduate Teaching Fellow at the University of Florida pursuing a PhD in Music Education with an emphasis in Wind Conducting. Mr. LaCognata received his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from the University of Illinois (1986) and his Master’s Degree in Trumpet Performance from Auburn University (1989).  He has also completed graduate work at the University of Colorado in Instrumental Conducting (1991-1992).

For the past nine years he has served as the Director of Bands at Winter Park High School.  At Winter Park his duties included serving as Performing Arts Department Chair, conducting the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, and the 200-member “Sound of the Wildcats” Marching Band.

Under the direction of Mr. LaCognata, the band program at Winter Park has received recognition within the state of Florida and throughout the nation. The band program has consistently received Superior ratings at the Florida Bandmasters Association music performance assessments and was awarded the prestigious Otto J. Kraushaar Award in 2001, 2003, 2005, 2006, and 2007. The “Sound of the Wildcats” Marching Band most recently participated in the 2005 Autozone Liberty Bowl, the 2002 Blue Cross Blue Shield Fiesta Bowl National Band Championship and parade, and the 2000 Sylvania Alamo Bowl in San Antonio, Texas.  In addition, the Wind Ensemble at Winter Park has performed at the 2002 Bands of America National Concert Band Festival in Indianapolis, Indiana, was a featured ensemble at the "President's Concert" for the 2007 Florida Music Educators' Association Conference in Tampa, Florida, and most notably performed at the 60th Anniversary of the Midwest Clinic in Chicago, Illinois in 2006.

Prior to his position at Winter Park High School Mr. LaCognata had a variety of teaching experiences.  At the collegiate level, he served as Assistant Director of Bands/Brass Instructor at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Assistant Director of Bands at Louisiana State University, and as the Associate Director of Bands at Iowa State University.  At the secondary level, he held positions as Director of Bands at Hillcrest High School, Country Club Hills, Illinois; Director of Bands at Tavares High School, Tavares, Florida; and as the Associate Director of Bands at Cypress Creek High School, Orlando, Florida.

Mr. LaCognata is an active adjudicator, clinician and performer. He is a member of the “Cathedral Brass” and a freelance trumpet player.  His professional affiliations include the Florida Bandmasters Association, the Florida Music Educators' Association, and the Music Educators National Conference.
