Philmore Hall

One of Hillside High School's (Durham, NC) most famous band directors was Philmore "Shorty" Hall. Mr. Hall was also the lead trumpet for the band Blackbirds of Paradise, out of Alabama. Hall graduated from Tuskegee College in 1929, and ended up in North Carolina teaching at the Laurinburg Institute where Dizzy Gillespie was one of his students.
