David Robinson

Mr. Robinson is a native of Yorktown, Virginia, and graduated from York High School. He received his Bachelor’s in Music Education from Shenandoah Conservatory of Music. Mr. Robinson began his teaching career at Jordan High School in Durham, NC, where he taught for 20 years. In 2006, he opened the Panther Creek High School band program where he taught instrumental music and was the arts department chair since its inception.

Since he has been the Director of Bands at Jordan High School and Panther Creek High School, Mr. Robinson has maintained a well-rounded music program having earned Straight Superiors many, many times at Music Performance Adjudication festivals in grade four, five, six and Masterworks music. David’s marching band consistently receives top honors for their performances at local, state and national performances having placed in the semifinals at Bands Of America Grand Nationals in 2019. David’s jazz ensembles and jazz combos have earned Straight Superiors at the Central Region Jazz MPA and he has always maintained a high standard of performance with an emphasis on improvisation and composition. Many students under David’s tutelage have earned chairs in all-state bands and national honors with many deciding to pursue a career in music either as performers and/or as educators. David has taught many Jazz students who have gone on to be professional Grammy award-winning jazz musicians. Mr.

Robinson’s greatest achievement was to be lucky enough to marry his wife Kim. They have been married for 28 years and have raised two beautiful and talented children: daughter, Taylor, and son, Ben. Mr. Robinson’s career as a music educator has spanned 34 years in both Durham and Wake Counties and he has recently decided to retire (2020). David has served as a member-at-large of the board of directors for the Central District many times, hosted the Central Region Jazz Clinic at both C.E. Jordan High School and Panther Creek High School as well as marching band competitions and winter guard contests for many years. David was selected as Band Director of the Year in 1997, and is a two-time recipient of the Award of Excellence, having been selected in 2000 and in 2020. David was also selected as the Central Region Jazz Award of Excellence recipient in 2020.

David Robinson is the epitome of what a well-rounded band director is, having had much success in the “Big 3” of band-related music education: concert band, marching band and jazz. David’s ensembles from Panther Creek High School have performed at NCMEA twice: jazz Ensemble in 2012, and Wind Ensemble in 2016. Mr. Robinson was also selected by School Band and Orchestra Magazine as the 2012 North Carolina representative of "50 Directors who Make a Difference." David received his National Board Certification in 2001, and renewal in 2012. His professional affiliations include National Association for Music Education; Phi Mu Alpha, professional music fraternity; the Central District Bandmasters Association; and the East Central District Bandmasters Association.
