Phillip Riggs is currently an instructor of music at the North Carolina School of Science and Math in Durham, NC. Prior to joining the NCSSM faculty he was the first band director and fine arts chair at Ronald Reagan High School in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System. Before assuming that position, Mr. Riggs taught in Davidson County for sixteen years. Twelve of those years were with the Ledford Bands. During his tenure, the Ledford Middle and High School Bands received numerous “Band-of-the-Day” Awards in marching competition and received numerous “Superior” ratings at concert festivals. In 2003, the Ledford Wind Ensemble was one of three high school groups selected to perform for the North Carolina Music Educators Conference with guest conductor/composer, Mark Camphouse.

Phillip was a co-founder and conductor of the Wachovia Winds Youth Wind Ensemble in central North Carolina. This ensemble is made up of talented musicians from Forsyth, Davidson, Davie, Stokes, Yadkin, and Surry Counties.

Mr. Riggs is a Past President of the North Carolina Band Directors Association. He served as chair of the North Carolina High School All-State Band for ten years and also served as chair of the Northwest District Band Directors Association. In the summer of 2011, Phillip served as coordinator of the MENC National Wind Ensemble at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. He has served on the board of the NC Music Educators (NCMEA) as the Technology Chair and is currently the chair of the NCMEA Mentor Committee. Phillip is active as a clinician and adjudicator throughout the Southeast. His professional affiliations include; North Carolina Music Educators Association, National Association for Music Educators, Phi Mu Alpha Music Fraternity, National Band Association, and American School Band Directors Association.
